One of Copacabana's oldest apartment buildings, built in 1927 and heritage-listed since 1994.
The Guarujá stands at Rua Domingos Ferreira 187, on the corner of Rua Constante Ramos, one block behind Avenida Atlântica in mid-Copacabana. Built in 1927 to a design by Adriano José Rodrigues, it predates almost everything around it — when it opened it was considered the largest building near the Copacabana waterfront, and at the time its upper floors still had a clear view of the sea.
The facade mixes classical lines with early Art Deco elements and has been preserved under a municipal heritage listing since 1994. The interiors tell a different story: a retrofit completed in 1998 converted the building into the South Beach Copacabana Residence Club, so behind the 1920s front the units are modernized and many operate as serviced or short-stay apartments.
Address: Rua Domingos Ferreira 187, Copacabana, Rio de Janeiro
Going up in 1927, the Guarujá belongs to the very first generation of multi-story residential buildings in Copacabana, before the 1930s Deco wave and decades before the post-war towers walled off the beach.
The city landmarked the facade in 1994, and the 1998 retrofit settled the building into its current double life: protected period architecture outside, contemporary residence club inside.
