Rio's only hotel built directly on the sand, at the foot of Vidigal.
Landmark buildingThe Sheraton Grand Rio stands at Avenida Niemeyer 121, at the base of the Vidigal hillside between Leblon and São Conrado. It is the only hotel in Rio built directly on the beach — the small Praia do Vidigal fronts the property — and its 538 rooms all have balconies facing the ocean.
As a resident landmark it matters because it anchors the Niemeyer corridor: the resort, the beach below it and the community above it are what define lower Vidigal. The hotel runs community programs in the neighborhood, from children's tennis classes to small-business support.
Address: Av. Niemeyer 121, Vidigal, Rio de Janeiro
It opened on 27 September 1974 as Rio's first true resort hotel, in the same era that pushed luxury development down Avenida Niemeyer toward São Conrado. Over five decades it has hosted delegations for Rio-92, Rio+20, the 2014 World Cup and the 2016 Olympics, and took the Sheraton Grand flag after a major renovation in the 2010s.
